LSAT, MCAT, GMAT, GRE, and DAT Test Prep

Continue and expand this year’s LSAT test prep program, which hired Michigan Law students to teach the LSAT to undergrads at a lesser cost than test prep services. Increase the affordability and expand the program to the MCAT, GMAT, GRE, DAT, so that Michigan students can have affordable test prep and post-undergraduate education can be accessible for all students.

Double Printing Money for Students

Increase the allocated printing money per student from $25 to $50 per academic term. Students, especially in the humanities and social studies, have to print far more than is currently allocated for class.

Double Printing Money for Students

We propose spending CSG resources on the expansion of bus hours, specifically on weekend nights between North and South campus. This will be a pilot program to encourage the University to pay for this, based on student use.

Formalized Tutoring Service for Large University Classes

Create a non-STEM equivalent to the Science Learning Center (SLC), a tutoring service for large STEM classes, to serve classes like Econ 101, Polsci 111, Writing 124, etc.

Central Laptop Program for All Schools

Expand the Laptop Loan Program to all University of Michigan students to relieve them of financial distress or a decline in academic progress due to a lack of equipment. This is an LSA program that allows students with Financial Need to receive a macbook to use while enrolled in classes and potentially purchase it at a lower cost (considering the depreciation value) when unenrolled.

Incentivize Research Projects to Hire Undergrads

Subsidize some top research projects not currently working through UROP, to get them to utilize undergraduate students instead of just graduate students, in order to expand these research opportunities to more undergraduates.

Course Guide for Smaller Schools

Work with the academic departments of colleges which don’t have their own course guide or whose classes are not all listed in the LSA Course Guide to create either a college-wide course guide or embed their classes in the LSA Course Guide.

Mentorship Program for Undergraduates

Create a “mentorship program” at Michigan, which will be based on similar programs that exist at other top schools. This program serves undergraduate students who are trying to get into a graduate school (law, medical, MBA, etc.), in pairing them with a Michigan graduate student from their relevant college, who will advise them on applications, classes, extracurricular choices, and anything else they need help with.

Feedback on Early Action and Decision Applications

Work with the Admissions Office to share feedback on a student’s application which has been deferred to Regular Admissions, like many other top schools. This provides students with the opportunity to provide more information about themselves with the possibility of improving their application.

Expand the ASL Program

Expand the ASL program by hiring two more professors (potentially one that is HOH/D). This will reduce the year long waitlist and Professor Berwanger’s workload, as well as show the Deaf community that they are respected and represented equally to other languages at the University of Michigan.

Fellowships for International Students

Expand access to federal grants for international students. This includes NIH training grants and University fellowships. For example, 6 of the 22 awards listed on Rackham’s website require US citizenship or permanent residency, and only 2 are targeted towards international students.

Class Registration for International Students

Allow international students to register for classes at the same time as all students instead of after they arrive on campus. This will give them an equal opportunity to secure a place in heavily-enrolled courses alongside domestic students.

Ford Students Access to Study Abroad Scholarships

Open up LSA study abroad scholarships to Ford students with LSA minors. Currently, LSA refuses to allow Ford students to apply for LSA funding, even though many Ford students are active and contributing members of LSA departments.

Training for FYW and ULW Professors in Helping ESL Students

Create a contrastive rhetoric training program for First Year Writing and Upper Level Writing professors on how to address the issues English as a Second Language (ESL) students uniquely face. Although ESL students generally out-perform native English students in most classes, they consistently do worse in writing classes, with average grades between a D- and C. This is not because their writing content is weaker, but their professors are not used to their rhetorical styles.
